Introduction

The Lloyd’s Register Foundation has emerged in the past decade to as a significant funder of universities and higher education. Based in the UK, the Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Lloyd’s Register Group. Formerly known as the Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, the philanthropic arm has a strong focus on maritime education, environment and safety.

Since its establishment, it has awarded nearly £150m in charitable disbursements. It has a solid history of supporting universities. According to our study of 10 years of its giving, around 45% of its awards have been made to universities.

  • It allocates the majority of its funding to transport and engineering education and research.

  • In the last ten reported years it has made 80 grants to 50 universities and higher education institutions in 18 countries totalling £68m.

  • European universities are the main beneficiaries receiving 69% of giving.

  • 35 universities in eight European countries have received £46m.

  • UK universities are the biggest beneficiaries with 26 UK universities received 60% of Lloyd’s Register Foundation university giving, totalling £40.5m.

  • Asia is the next biggest beneficiary receiving £18.6m between eight universities in five countries.

  • The National University of Singapore has received the largest volume of funding over the past decade.

  • The top three university beneficiaries are the National University of Singapore (£11.1m), University of York (£10.0m) and the University of Southampton which has received (£6.5m).

  • The National University of Singapore and the University of York both received single grants worth £10.0m, the largest grants awarded by the Foundation.

  • The top 10 university beneficiaries have collectively received £45.9m, 68% of all Foundation giving. Seven out of the top 10 university beneficiaries are from the UK.
